It’s mathy — “audit before you automate” — and you’ll need to fix pressure/flow first; IAAPA’s sustainability modules were helpful for ideas but didn’t move numbers like the audit did.
Quick win for us came from a SITES heat-island PDH: pairing light-colored queue canopies with deciduous vine trellises over the switchbacks cut MRT and brought queue temps down about 5–6°F — sunscreen for pavement — and we tied misting to the same ET feed as irrigation so it only pulses on peak afternoons. IAAPA’s sustainability modules are a good primer, but you’ll still need the IA scheduling calculator to set zone runtimes and midday pauses; @j_larson45’s layering note is right, just don’t skip the albedo spec on deck coatings.
Example: QWEL (WaterSense) was the most actionable for me — split our serpentine queue into sun/shade hydrozones, bumped Kc for lush pockets, and switched shrub beds to subsurface drip; that cut water about 15% and dropped MRT about 3–4°C with a couple of narrow-canopy trees at pinch points.
