Offer from design-build — worth the jump

I’ve got a mid-senior offer from a design–build outfit in Denver: about 10% bump and a vehicle stipend, but less time for early concept iterations. My sweet spot is sculpting stormwater and habitat into public plazas (8 years, SITES AP; Rhino/QGIS), and I’m wary of value engineering flattening soil volumes, plant diversity, and salvaged-material detailing. If you’ve made this switch, did you keep the aesthetic rigor and sustainability intact, and how did it shape your portfolio and site time?

When I jumped to a design–build shop, the one thing that protected my ecology moves was a one-page ‘non-negotiables’ sheet baked into the bid set — min soil volumes by zone, diversity ratios, and salvage targets with priced alternates — so VE had to move around them instead of through them. Ask for a pilot where you sit in the estimator’s takeoff; you’ll see exactly where your grading and planting get pinched and what line items defend them. Small caveat: you’ll trade some iteration time for pre-bid coordination, but it beats arguing ‘soil volumes’ after the GMP.

Building on @clarkson92, the move that stuck for me was tying a few ecology metrics to pay apps/retention — e.g., infiltration test passes and a minimum species mix verified at walkthrough. Also write salvage sourcing as a dated procurement milestone, so it can’t get VE’d out at the eleventh hour. If they won’t bite, ask for a single ‘design-assist day’ per project up front; it kept just enough early iteration without blowing the D–B tempo.

I’ve faced similar concerns with design constraints. Consider discussing your non-negotiables early on, like you mentioned with plant diversity — might help you strike a balance. @lucasC2021 nailed the importance of metrics.

It sounds like a solid opportunity! Just make sure to clarify how much flexibility you’ll have in the early phases. @lucasC2021 had a good point about tying performance metrics to contracts.
