Updating our pirate coats for July heat and I need them to keep that swashbuckler shoulder and nipped waist without collapsing after sweat, sunscreen, and rain. We’re at 11 shows a day with 40°C washes; has anyone had durable success with washable wool‑poly twill plus fusible tricot or a vented interlining that won’t bubble — bonus if elbows don’t bag after 30 cycles?
I’ve had better luck ditching full fusibles in summer and underlining the fronts/shoulders with sew‑in poly hair canvas, pad‑stitched in a loose “grid” — it kept the pirate shoulder and nipped waist sharp after 30+ 40°C washes with no bubbling… Small caveat: I do fuse a narrow strip of Vlieseline H410 at the elbow and run one vertical stitch channel to anchor it, which stops bagging. Curious if you’ve tried a mesh back yoke for venting, @CostumeDan?
, “40°C washes” plus sunscreen will bubble most tricot — switch to a thin 3D spacer mesh (2–3 mm airmesh) as a vented interlining in the fronts/shoulders, stitched only into the armscye and side seams so the crest holds but it can’t delaminate (prewash the mesh at 40°C; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacer_fabric). For elbows, a bias‑cut powernet stay between shell and lining snaps back after 30+ cycles. Do you have sleeve lining to hide that stay?
